چکیده

Background Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DT-MRI) enables 3D evaluation of whole heart microstructure. DT invariants evaluate microstructural remodeling by quantifying trace (increases with decreasing cellularity), fractional anisotropy (FA, decreases with increasing fibrosis), and tissue mode (decreases with increasing fiber disarray) [1]. We have shown that DT invariant data identifies significant global microstructural remodeling (increase in trace and decrease in FA) in the pacing induced heart failure (HF) model [2]. The objective of this study was to quantify transmural microstructural remodeling between normal and HF myocardium using DT invariants.

Microstructural remodeling in the post-infarct porcine heart measured by diffusion tensor MRI and T1-weighted late gadolinium enhancement MRI

The objective of this study was to quantify microstructural remodeling in peri-infarcted and infarcted porcine myocardium using diffusion tensor MRI (DT-MRI) for the first time. High resolution ex vivo late gadolinium enhanced (LGE) MRI was used to segment the DT-MRI data into normal, peri-infarct and infarcted myocardium. LGE-MRI based segmentation produces regions with significantly different...

Serial diffusion tensor MRI and tractography of the mouse heart in-vivo: impact of ischemia on myocardial microstructure

Background Diffusion tensor MRI (DTI) has been used to investigate infarct healing and remodeling in several species. Tractography of the myocardium has also recently been reported. However, these prior studies were conducted ex-vivo on excised hearts. Here, we use in-vivo DTI of the mouse heart to follow microstructural changes in the myocardium in response to ischemia. Mean diffusivity (MD) a...

Transmural heterogeneity of diffusion anisotropy in the sheep myocardium characterized by MR diffusion tensor imaging.

The orientation of MRI-measured diffusion tensor in the myocardium has been directly correlated to the tissue fiber direction and widely characterized. However, the scalar anisotropy indexes have mostly been assumed to be uniform throughout the myocardial wall. The present study examines the fractional anisotropy (FA) as a function of transmural depth and circumferential and longitudinal locati...

Heterogeneity of diffusion tensor imaging measurements of fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity in normal human hearts in vivo

Background Cardiac diffusion tensor imaging (cDTI) by cardiovascular magnetic resonance is becoming more robust for clinical imaging. It has the potential to assess microstructural changes, such as disarray in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, through measures of fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD).[1] However, normal variation in regional and transmural FA and MD is not well descri...

Transmural heterogeneity and remodeling of ventricular excitation-contraction coupling in human heart failure.

BACKGROUND Excitation-contraction (EC) coupling is altered in end-stage heart failure. However, spatial heterogeneity of this remodeling has not been established at the tissue level in failing human heart. The objective of this article was to study functional remodeling of excitation-contraction coupling and calcium handling in failing and nonfailing human hearts. METHODS AND RESULTS We simul...
